The Childsmile Programme

Available throughout the NHS, the Childsmile Programme is a national programme designed to improve the oral health of children in Scotland, ensuring they have access to suitable dental care and services.

Families with new born babies and young children are offered the opportunity through Health Visitors, Public Health Nurses and Oral Health Support Workers to register their children with an NHS Dentist. By visiting the dental practice, children will receive tailored oral health advice and preventative services.

Health Visitors and Oral Health Support Workers will telephone or visit families. They offer oral health advice and support, including help to arrange dental visits.

Emma Bell, one of our dental nurses, has received Childsmile training and can now offer appointments to participating families. She will discuss oral health, demonstrate good toothbrushing skills and can apply fluoride varnish (an extra protection against tooth decay), for children from 2 years of age.

All parents will receive child dental packs, which contain a toothbrush, fluoride toothpaste, a free flow drinking cup for the first year of life and advice from birth to 5 years.

In addition, all children attending preschool and a proportion of primary schools in Scotland will be participating in the Childsmile supervised daily toothbrushing programme. This Childsmile service provides the opportunity and support for children to brush their teeth during the day, as well as encouraging toothbrushing twice daily in the home.

The fully integrated Childsmile programme is now available for all children and families living throughout Scotland. For further information, tips and advice to help achieve a healthy mouth, please visit the Childsmile website.
